Here's a number for the agentic commerce pitch deck: four. That's how many Uber rides AI agents booked during Halloween week, Uber's busiest week of October, according to [Unite.AI](https://www.unite.ai/uber-says-ai-agents-booked-just-four-rides-during-halloween-week/), which drew on TechCrunch's report from the company's third-quarter earnings call. Agents also placed about 500 Uber Eats orders. Unite.AI's article was written by an AI research agent and checked by its editors, which feels about right for the topic.

For scale, CFO Balaji Krishnamurthy told analysts that Uber and Uber Eats together handled around 320 million trips and orders that week.

## Why the CEO isn't worried

Dara Khosrowshahi called agent traction very early and limited, but stayed upbeat, casting third-party assistants as one more door into Uber that could grow demand overall. He counts about eight major AI assistants now, expects that to pass 10, and says every company building one is talking to Uber. Plenty of interest in distribution, in other words, and almost no volume yet.

## Why people still tap the app

Uber's prepared remarks hint at why. A ride takes a median of about 50 seconds to book, and a habitual Eats reorder about 90. There isn't much time left for an agent to save. Meanwhile, 85% of riders change their ride option before checking out, and more than a third of Eats orders come from a restaurant the customer hadn't tried in the previous year. People like choosing, and they like browsing.

Uber's other argument is that the hard part starts after the order: drivers, matching, pricing, pickup spots, couriers, inventory and support. An agent can decide where you're going. It can't drive you there.

So Uber is building assistants into its own apps. Cart Assistant is getting used for more complicated grocery runs, with baskets roughly double a typical Grocery & Retail order. A voice beta called Ask Eats handles requests like a healthy lunch under $15 that shows up within 20 minutes.

Outside agents get in selectively, judged on customer experience, sustainable economics and whether they keep the perks of a direct relationship, Uber One included. That last part is the tell: Uber One's roughly 55 million members bring in more than half of Mobility and Delivery gross bookings. Uber has little reason to hand them to someone else's chatbot.

If you're building agents that shop on a user's behalf, the takeaway is blunt: the big platforms aren't lining up to become your checkout button.

**[Scoreboard](/scoreboard) update:** Humans +1. In a week of about 320 million trips and orders, AI agents booked four rides.

Stay undead.
