# Claude can now read your bank accounts and tell you where the money went

> Anthropic's Personal Finance beta connects bank and card accounts through Plaid with read-only access. It can flag duplicate charges and creeping bills, but it can't move a cent.

Claude now wants to look at your bank statements. Anthropic has launched a tool called Personal Finance that links bank and credit card accounts through Plaid so you can ask Claude about your money, Aisha Malik reports for [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/05/claude-can-now-analyze-your-spending-with-its-new-personal-finance-tool/). It's rolling out in beta this week to Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the US.

## What it does

The headline use case is the end-of-month question: where did it all go? Claude totals spending across the linked accounts and sorts it into categories such as housing bills, eating out and shopping, and you can keep digging from there, for example by asking whether that's more than usual.

It also goes looking for problems: duplicate charges, surprise fees and bills that keep creeping up. It can answer bigger questions, like whether you're spending more than you earn, and explain terms such as APR, with the math on how much interest you paid over the past year.

## What it can't do

Access is read-only. Anthropic says the tool has no power to move, invest or otherwise manage funds. Claude gets a narrow slice of data: the bank and account names, the account type, the final four digits of each account number, current balances and credit limits, plus a maximum of two years of transactions. Conversations inside the Personal Finance hub aren't used to train Anthropic's models.

Anthropic is also leaning on a contrast with the competition. Its blog post says the tool has no ads or sponsored recommendations and doesn't sell its own cards, loans or savings accounts, "so your money questions get a straight answer."

## Catching up

This is a catch-up move. OpenAI gave ChatGPT similar finance features in May, also letting users link accounts and ask about spending and long-term planning. Anthropic has been pushing Claude into new verticals all year, with products for legal work and for financial services firms.

For developers, the interesting part is the pattern: a bank-data aggregator in the middle, read-only scopes, a short list of fields, and a training carve-out for one specific surface. Expect that to become the template for any assistant that touches regulated data.

For everyone else, the question is simpler. A chatbot that finds the gym membership you forgot to cancel is useful. Whether you want a chatbot to know that much about you is a separate decision, and the off switch is not linking the account.

**[Scoreboard](/scoreboard) update:** AI +1. Claude gets read access to people's bank accounts and starts auditing their spending.

Stay undead.
