Firebase Studio shuts down in March 2027. Google wants you prompting in AI Studio or Antigravity

New sign-ups ended in June. Developers have until March 22, 2027 to export their work before Google deletes what's left.

Google's Firebase Studio is on its way out, and the date is now what matters. As Engadget's Ian Carlos Campbell reports, Google stopped new sign-ups and new workspaces on June 22. The export deadline is March 22, 2027. After that, the browser IDE shuts down and any remaining data is deleted.

Google announced the sunset back in March, saying it wanted to make it clearer where developers should start building. The replacements are its two AI-first tools, Google AI Studio and Antigravity.

What changed

Firebase Studio launched in 2025 as a web IDE wired into Firebase, Google's backend services for databases, hosting and more. It had an AI assistant that could prototype and tweak apps, but most of the product was still a code editor.

That's the part Google decided it doesn't need. Firebase itself is staying, and both newer tools can connect to it, so a separate Firebase-focused IDE became redundant in Google's eyes.

Where to go

  • Google AI Studio is web-based, like Firebase Studio, and built around prompting and chatting. Google calls it the fastest path from a prompt to a full-stack production app.
  • Antigravity is a desktop app that runs locally. You still work with the code directly while directing several agents that can work on their own, and it supports models other than Google's.
  • Outside Google, Engadget points to Cursor (now owned by SpaceX), Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex.

Most of these share a shape: the developer leads a team of agents that take the first pass. Costs come as subscriptions, token billing or both, and price may decide where people move as much as the interface does.

The developer read

The pattern matters more than the product. A code-first IDE with AI added on is being retired in favor of tools where the prompt is the starting point, and where some users never touch the raw code at all. Google is betting that's where new projects begin now.

The practical move is boring and urgent: if anything of yours lives in Firebase Studio, export it now, not in March. Shutdown dates have a habit of landing in release week.

Scoreboard update: AI +1. Google retires a code-first IDE so new projects start with a prompt.

Stay undead.
